My friend Neko is coming to visit me in May so that we can go to a local anime convention together. We’ve been going swimming once a week over the semester break and got to talking that we should do some kind of partner cosplay. It was kind of obvious that it’d have to be a Disney cosplay, because we have this 10+ years tradition of watching Disney movies together. Amazingly, it’s hard to find something for two people to cosplay that’d be instantly recognizable – we came up with lots of three person (the fairies from Sleeping Beauty!) or group options (the muses in Hercules!).
Eventually we narrowed it down to either the Lady and the Tramp or Pocahontas and Meeko. I decided I wanted to do Pocahontas, mostly if we’re being honest because I wanted to see my friend as Meeko. 😀 Also I figured Pocahontas’ dress would be fairly easy to sew (I’m so intimidated by the richly detailed cosplays I’ve seen on some people!) … of course now I’m freaking out because that dress is quite short and I’m not half as athletic as is fitting for a Pocahontas!
The thought that this cosplay might be some kind of cultural appropriation has given me some pause, though. But I figure since the movie is quite the travesty of historical accuracy itself, I’m in okay-ish territory? Would love some input there!
I’ve already ordered the wig yesterday. I’m going to comb through my Burda Style magazines to see if I find a pattern similar to Pocahontas’ dress, or several patterns I could combine. It shouldn’t be that hard though, it is a very simple dress after all. I’m not sure what kind of fabric to buy, though. Any ideas? Also, I need to make that necklace, but I hope my friend can help me with that, because she has a lot more experience making accessories for cosplays.
There’s no way, by the way, that I’m going barefoot like Pocahontas, a fact that I’ve noticed just now looking at the pictures in this post. Not happening.

Oh Gott, schon wieder dieses Thema. Ich habe vor ein paar Tagen mit einer Freundin diskutiert, ob das Blackface ist, wenn Oliver Kalkofe Detlef D! Soost parodisiert. Er macht sich ja nicht generell lächerlich, sondern über die eine bestimmte Person. So ist es auch hier: du gehst nicht als “Indianer”, sondern als Pocahontas. Wir sind allerdings zu keinem Ergebnis gekommen und wissen auch nicht, wen man da fragen kann. Uns selbst hängt ja das White Privilege aus den Ohren, sodass wir das gar nicht entscheiden dürften.
Ich weiß, das war jetzt sehr hilfreich, aber wenn du eine definitive Antwort findest, sag mir bitte Bescheid.
Und ich möchte Fotos von dem Meeko-Cosplay sehen, ganz dringend!
Ja, also ich denke auch, nachdem ich einen bestimmten Charakter aus einem bestimmten Film mache, ist das noch eher in Ordnung (hoffe ich) – ich würd z.B nie als “Indianerin” gehen, weil ich das als respektlos empfände. Hab jetzt auch im Stoffladen mal durch das Musterbuch mit den Faschingsschnittmustern geblättert, und fand die ganzen “Indianer”-Kostüme (und alle anderen, die sich bei einer anderen Kultur bedient haben) ziemlich schrecklich.
Aber wie gesagt, ich lass mich da gern eines besseren belehren.
Haha, die Fotos kommen bestimmt, die beiden Cosplays sind gerade auch in Arbeit. Meeko hat ganz süße Öhrchen!
Also falls du dich dafür entscheidest würde ich sagen, das Kleid ist ganz klar ein Cambie mit nur einem Ärmel ;)!
