Grumperina’s Shifting Sands Scarf has been in my Ravelry queue pretty much since I made an account there. A lot of scarf patterns languish in my queue from that time where I still thought I had enough patience for scarves. Besides, I have plenty of scarves and shawls to keep my neck warm.

That said, when I looked at the pattern in my queue recently, I realized that I had made my mother a hat using a similar cabled pattern. With her birthday coming up, I decided to order some merino yarn in a similar shade of red and get to knitting immediately. I knew I needed to start working on it early, and it was a good thing I did, too. While the pattern’s four row repeat is easily memorized, the little cables knit in sport weight yarn slow down the knitting process immensely. Worse than that, I found them incredibly tedious to knit!

The finished scarf is so pretty it was worth the effort and mindnumbing work, though.
